Games 20-11

Game 20:  Bucknell 64 Kansas 63, 2005 1st Round
With 1:08 left, Michael Lee of KU hit a pair of FT to cut the Bucknell lead to 62-59.  He then stole the ball and was fouled and the refs called a clear-path foul giving Kansas 2 FTs and the ball.  Lee made both FTs to cut the lead to one and Keith Langford would make another 2, giving Kansas a short-lived lead.  German-born big man Chris McNaughton would hit a banked hook shot to give Bucknell the lead back with 10.5 seconds left.  Kansas' Keith Langford air balled a jumper and the Bison snared the rebound and were fouled.  They missed the front end of the one-and-one and Kansas all-everything, Wayne Simien grabbed the board and called a TO with 2.4 seconds left.  Michael Lee would launch a pass to Simien who caught it and like Christian Laettneryears before, had a shot but it missed and Bucknell had shocked the Jayhawks.

Game 19:  UConn 71 Clemson 70, 1990 Sweet 16
UConn lead 59-40 but Clemson wouldn't give up. cutting it to 69-67 with :21 seconds left.  UConn's Tate George made an errant pass and Clemson had a chance to take the lead.  David Young buried a 3 and gave Clemson a brief lead.  George missed a shot and Clemson's Sean Tyson grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 1.6 seconds left.  Tyson missed the front end and Scott Burrell grabbed the rebound and called a TO with 1 second left.  Jim Calhoun called for Burrell to inbound knowing he had a strong arm (He was drafted as pitcher by the Mariners).  Burrell managed to get the pass into George who caught it 90' away.  He would make a twisting shot to give UConn an incredible win.

Game 18:  Villanova 66 Georgetown 64, 1986 National Title Game
Villanovahad lost to the Hoyas twice during the regular season but the 8-seeds played one of the near flawless games in tournament history and shocked the heavy favorites

Game 17:  North Carolina 74 Michigan State 70, 1957 Final 4
UNC undefeated season almost became a footnote to a half court game winning shot.  Unfortunately for Sparty, the shot was made just fractions of a second  after the buzzer went off.  UNC had to survive a missed FT with 6 seconds left that would have iced the game for MSU in the 2nd overtime.  Johnny Green, MSU best player missed after a teammate had whispered to a UNC player, "30-1".  The Heels Pete Brennan grabbed the board and raced down the court to score and send the game into a 3rd ovt. where Carolina finally pulled away for the win.

Game 16:  Canisius 79 NC State 78, 1956 1st Round
NC State was a prohibitive favorite over the 17-6 Golden Griffins.  NC State coach Everett Case was aksed about Canisius and said he didn't know much about them much less how to spell their name.  Yet at the end, it was Canisius Fran Corcoran, cut byhis HS team, making a jumper at the buzzer to shock the Wolfpack.

Game 15:  Syracuse 81 Kansas 78, 2003 National Title Game
Syracuse jumped all over the Jayhawks but KU fought back with a chance to win late.  Syracuse could have put the game away at the line but missed free throws by Kueth Duany and Hakim Warrick kept KU alive.  Kirk Hinrich was expected to get the shot to tie it on the final possession but the Orange collapsed on him forcing him to pass to the wide open Michael Lee.  Hakim Warrick made up for his missed FT and got close enough to Lee to block the shot and give Jim Boeheim his title.

Game 14:  Duke 61 Butler 59, 2010 National Title Game
Cinderella wouldn't go down without a fight hanging with the Devils throughout the game, never allowing Duke to pull away.  Brian Zoubek was told by Coach K to miss a FT with seconds left forcing Butler to go the full length of the court without a TO.  It was a gamble that almost backfired when Butler star Gordon Hayward just missed a half court prayer.

Game 13:  UCLA 73 Gonzaga 71, 2006 Sweet 16
Gonzaga lead the Bruins 71-62 with 3:27 left when everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.  UCLA scored the final 9 points to stun the Bulldogs and leave their star Adam Morrison in agony and tears.

Game 12:  Northwestern State 64 Iowa 63, 2006 1st Round
Iowa lead by 17 with 8:29 left like a 3-seed vs. a 14 should but Northwestern State stormed back.  Iowa lead by 2 after Greg Brunner made a FT but he missed the second and Northwestern State went for the win.  Kerwin Forges missed the 1st 3 and when Jermaine Wallace ran the rebound down, he was deep in the left corner and to shake a defender moved closer to the baseline and heaved a prayer that was answered at the buzzer sending the Hawkeyes home.

Game 11:  Northern Iowa 69 Kansas 67, 2010 2nd Round
Kansas was a clear favorite to win it alll in 201 until they met:  Ali Farokhmanesh

Lots of Jayhawks losses here, but you missed the 1988 title game. Give Kansas their due if you're gonna take them to task for their losses. There are five KU losses here, some of them are upsets, but LOTS of great teams have been upset. How about george mason over UNC and Michigan State back to back in '06? There were great games, but I just feel like a few fewer Kansas losses could go here. What about UNLV's loss to Duke? UNC over Michigan? Arkansas over Duke? Etc.
