My previous post wasn't a shot at ACC fan(s) or Brian. I'm an ACC guy fan puzzled by the lackluster season or what I perceive to be a lackluster season. Should Duke make the Final 4, it's a good enough season for the conference.
That brings me to Wake Forest who just dropped out of the Top 25 with a loss at NC State. As I noted earlier, outside of Duke, they have the best out of conference resume. On top of a top 25 RPI (21st), their SOS is 25th. They do have a loss to William & Mary who is skirting the bubble as an at-large.
But red flags abound when we look closer at Wake. Though they give up points, their FG defense is very good (8th) and AdjD is 21st. And Al-Farouq Aminu & Chas McFarland provide a presence in the middle. Wake is 34th in rebounding and 18th in blocked shots but...they off-set that by being one of the worst fouling teams in the land (263), getting clipped for 20 a game.
They turn the ball over way too much. At almost 15 (271st!) a game, that spells trouble in March. They don't share the ball well (224th), are Texas-bad at the FT line (260th) and make so few 3's (316th), they're not even listed in 3pt FG %. This wouldn't be so bad if they were better around the basket but 44% overall FG % isn't anything special (97th).
They have a very good if not great college player in Al-Farouq Aminu who is worth watching but this is the Fake Wake. Sort of like the last dozen or so tourney made Wake teams...
