Virginia Tech gets in on the strength of their 6-3 ACC record. The RPI is 58 and the SOS is 180. In other words, they need to keep winning games in the ACC. Their best win is a home win over Clemson and a neutral court victory over Seton Hall. Yikes. The only game they played against a top 20 RPI team was Temple where they lost 61-50. They also have a loss to the downtrodden Tar Heels.
The star of the team is junior guard, Malcolm Delaney who averages over 20 points per game with 4 passy things per game, too.
What do they do so well that gets them to 19-4? In a word, defense. They keep the opposition under 40% from the field. Yes, 4th in defensive efficiency in Pomeroy ratings.
Offensively, they average 71 points per game on awful 42% shooting, good for 204th in the land. They also shoot a brutal 32% beyond the arc. That's good for 258th.
If they keep winning in conference and can stay above .500(Very doable with only road games at Duke and Tech remaining), they'll likely be dancing but it seems doubtful it'll be a long dance.
