The Mountain West begins its conference tournament this Wednesday in Las Vegas. They are usurping the Ohio Valley and will crown the first champion of the 2020 tournament season this Saturday.
San Diego State rolled through the regular season with only one loss coming last Saturday to UNLV. The only other team in Brian’s recent bracket was Utah State. SDSU is 4th in KenPom and Utah State is 42nd. The Aggies lost at New Mexico on Saturday and probably don’t want to do anything silly like lose in their first game in this tournament. As it so happens, it’s likely they get a rematch on Thursday.
Nevada is the 3-seed and gave SDSU fits on Saturday. They’re 78th in KenPom. Other top 100 teams are UNLV the 4-seed at 97. 5-seed Boise State is 86, 6-seed Colorado State is 94th. UNLV is riding a 5-game winning streak with a win over Boise State in that mix. They play on Thursday.
San Diego State is playing for seeding purposes and Utah State is playing to wrap a spot up. The rest are playing for a chance to dance. The league sits 10th in KenPom behind the A-10 and WCC. 2-bids would be the max without an upset. Nevada and UNLV definitely stand a chance.
The Pick: San Diego State
