This team is all about offense. A slow paced team, 301st in possessions per game, they are numero uno in offensive efficiency and aren't that far behind what Bucky did last year. They are an excellent shooting team. They have an effective fg% of 55.1%, 19th overall. They shoot 38% from 3, 54.2% from 2. They don't turn it over either. They're 2nd in the nation in turnover %. They also hit the glass. They have an offensive rebounding % of 34.1%, 54th overall.
Alas, as good as they are on offense, they're almost as bad on defense. They're 233rd in defensive efficiency. Opponents have an effective fg% of 50.4%, making Notre Dame 199th. Teams shoot 39.4% from 3, which puts the Irish 339th. Some of that is luck but a lot is bad defense. Teams can get good looks. They don't force many turnovers, 326th in forcing turnovers. One thing they don't do, is foul. They're only 23rd in FTA/FGA.
Mike Brey commented depth this time of year is overrated and he's right. Most teams shorten their benches. His team is basically 6 deep as the starters all get 67% and above of the available minutes. Demetrius Jackson is a future pro at point guard. He's back from an ankle injury and is their best player. VJ Beachem is a volume deep threat and he's good, hitting 43% from deep. Big man Zach Auguste has a defensive rebounding % of 26.9%. He's disruptive in the middle.
Irish will probably finish with 12-13 wins in conference as the remainder of the schedule is soft compared to what they've been through. How good are they? Offensively, pretty damn good but the defense is so bad, they'll need a good matchup to get out of the first weekend and are probably going to be over seeded.
