UVA!

Let's not forget who the coach is. From Green Bay Preble. Too bad his claim to fame isn't the time he beat an 11 year old's ass (me) in a game of horse in the Zentmeyer's driveway.

I taught him all he knows. Brian, you're welcome.

North Carolina

Down 20...at home...against Virginia..hilarious.

Also Russian for Can't Make Free Throws

THEY ARE FREE...Texas

DePaul

Remind me not to make another joke about if they even have a basketball program. They beat Marquette and damn near take out Syracuse.

As March approaches is continues to get more interesting.

'Texas' is Bulgarian For Overrated

That is all.

Duke and Changie McChangerton

Wow, can I get a commericial break without having to see Mr. I open my mouth and the dow drops 600 points? Way to make a painful game even more painful by showing Douchie McDoucherton and his #2 every 10 minutes. As for the game they looked like crap and gave up a ton of back door layups, but 71% shooting on the day is super ridiculous. 60% and that game is close....maybe. F-it. Stupid Big East.

Afternoon delights...

-Yay, Marquette! A close win on the road against the maddeningly erratic Huskies of UConn but a road win in any conference game is just fine. Brian, I don't think UConn, as of now, is a lock for the dance.

-The 'ville got jobbed at West Virginia but don't blow late double-digit leads and it doesn't come down to fraidy cat officials.

-Duke looks terrible against Georgetown. Do they have a "guy" that can carry them in games like this? I wonder. Scheyer's a nice player but...they don't look like a contender.

Hopey McChange

I think Verne Lundquist just had an O-gasm.

Coach K to grace YOU again

A reliable source has told me that Coach K will be making a recruiting trip to watch Menominee Falls super soph J.P. Tokoto next week on either Tuesday or Friday.

Roy Williams and Bo Ryan were at his home game a few weeks ago schmoozing with the locals before and after the game according to same source. I'm guessing Roy didn't rip Wisconsin's style during his visit but he should have. Bill Self was there as well but Bo and Roy were more popular. You think if Self wins another title at Kansas (Nice tries, though, Roy), he'd get more respect? Tom Crean is on this kid, too. Hear that, Buzz?

Anyway, there you go Brian. Here's your chance to stalk him.

Douche Bag Of The Week

This week's award goes to Grevious Vaszuez of Maryland. I've never seen a bigger tool in college basketball outside of the baby blue contingent and even Mouthbreather McMouthsAgape didn't behave like Vazquez. Every shot, every lay up, every steal is an opportunity for some dance, wiggle, or smack talk. How about you actually make the Big Dance before you start acting like you've won something.

Digging For Gold

Nice win last night for the Charlotte 49ers (Why 49ers for a school in Charlotte?) over Temple.

On the bubble looking at Brian's projections, Charlotte's RPI is 42. They have one decent win at Louisville and last night's. Out of conference, they got poleaxed by Duke and also lost on the road to pre-suspension Tennessee. They also have a tail-kicking at Old Dominion on their resume. ODU is battling for supremacy in the always tough Colonial.

I don't expect anything from this team come March but Bobby Lutz's squad has recovered nicely from an 11-20 season of a year ago. And everybody loved Jarvis Lang.

On To Tonight

Tonight's slate has a couple games of note. The two I'd like to call out are Notre Dame vs Villanova and BYU vs New Mexico.

Notre Dame @ Villanova
The Fighting Irish are currently out of the bracket and need this as a signature win. 'Nova will not be able to handle Harangody so it'll be up to one other Irish player to setup and score tonight. If they don't get a superstar performance out of somebody they'll go down and go down big. 'Gody goes for 32 and 13 but Nova wins due to superb guard play, 81-72.

BYU @ New Mexico
Right now the Mountain West conference is a 3 bid league. These two and UNLV are in and San Diego State still has a chance. BYU has cracked the top ten in the AP poll (as if that matters) and New Mexico's RPI has been top 20 all year. A loss doesn't hurt either team too much but a win could be huge for seeding down the line. A tight one to the end, New Mexico 64, BYU 61.

Vanderbilt 101

Now that Kentucky has fallen by the wayside, did you know that Vanderbilt now controls its own destiny in the SEC East?? Okay, sure, they have 12 conference games left including a tilt on ESPNU tonite at Tennessee and a trip to Lexington on Saturday but let's take a glimpse at Frank Seckar's alma mater.

Entering play tonite, they have a healthy 28 RPI. They're led by two foreign born players, swingman Jeffrey Taylor and Australian-born (And Bogut look-alike) C AJ Ogilivy. At 15-3, they have nice wins at South Carolina, Alabama & St. Mary's. At home, they've knocked off Florida & Mizzou. The one loss that hurts, was an early season loss at Western Kentucky who hasn't had a good season. The also lost at home to an average Cincinnati team.

Numbers that matter for the Commodores:

They're outscoring opponents by an average of 79 to 66 a game, though that margin is smaller in 4 conference games. They're also shooting at a 50% clip and holding opponents to around 40% a game. They're even on the boards and turn the ball over a bit much at 14 a game and shoot a very pedestrian 68% from the charity stripe.

If they win one of the next two, that'll go a long way for them as the two other tough road games are at Ole Miss and Florida.

They're not a Final 4 team but Kevin Stallings continues to a fine job and don't be surprised if they win a game or two in the dance.

Kentucky Last Night

Now I get to gloat; yep saw that Kentucky loss from a mile away. Here are my take away's from the game.

1. John Wall is fast, like stupid fast. At the end of the game he was getting around the defenders and penetrating with ease. He's a star.
2. Where's Patrick Patterson? He's supposed to be the anchor and leader and I don't think he scored in the second half. This might be a case of too many superstars on one team. If Bledsoe, Cousins, and Wall are taking 75% of the shots Patterson is left for the scraps. I think he needs to get involved more.
3. I promise you Cousins will do something stupid and get suspended for a game this year. You can just tell he's a baby out there.
4. Kentucky's defense is awful. In the last 5 minutes they double teamed Downey at half court and it took about 5 dribbles for him to get around it and make it a 5 on 3 break and easy lay-ups
5. Yes, Downey had 30 points, but he took 29 shots. Who is he? Allen Iverson.

Kentucky showed me tonight why they are a legit national title contender and why with the right match up they could be eliminated in the second round. Even if they do make the Final Four it'll probably be stripped away like Calipari's last 2 Final Fours.

Preparations Have Begun

First of all, it's good to have Kurlinski, I mean Darth Punjab join in on the fun. Second, the old cherries have been thrown away and the new ones prepared. This year we are going will a full batch of Cherry McGillicuddy cherries and a full batch of UV Cherry Vodka cherries. A full two months of fermenting should do the trick.

Cliche 101 - Syracuse

First off, thanks for the space.

Listening to Bilas and crew last night, according to them, the biggest difference between Syracuse of this season and last, is their unselfish play.

Is this so?

According to the numbers, Syracuse is averaging 2 more assists per game (20.1 vs. 18.1). Probably, more importantly, the turnovers per game is down 2 as well (16.0 vs 18.3). The biggest difference is the Orange is shooting a robust 53% from the field vs 48% last year and 39% from beyond the arc vs 34% last year.

What Jay and Bill were subtley saying was, having Wesley Johnson and Andy Rautins being the go-to guys is better than Jonny Flynn and Eric Devendorf. Though Johnson is a F vs. Flynn being a G, running the offense through Johnson has made Syracuse a more efficient and potent offense making them a better bet to possibly make a run. Now, only if they could make free throws...

Tonight's Games

If you got some time tonight check out ESPN at 8pm. Kentucky loses to South Carolina to open the door for Kansas to reclaim the number #1 seed. I figure if I keep predicting Kentucky to lose eventually I will be right and then can take all the credit.

Also, on the Big 10 network, if you can stomach it, Northwestern and Minnesota play which at this point is huge for bubble status 6 weeks from now.

Consistancy

Throwing interceptions on the last play (or 2nd to last play in the case of NY) in three consecutive seasons takes dedication.

This Is Not Detroit Man, This is the Super Bowl!

And your not going anymore.

Final Four Sleeper #1

Georgia Tech
I know, you're all shocked that my number 1 Final Four sleeper is out of the ACC. Anyway I look at Georgia Tech to get better as the year goes on and ultimately end up with a four seed. They have plenty of depth and upperclassmen in Gani Lawal and Zachery Peacock to lead the way. Iman Shumpert has been solid all year and there are plenty of Freshman who have been improving through out the year. Derrick Favors was the #1 recruit coming out of High School and as long has he doesn;'t hit the freshman wall should be a force. Let's not forget that Paul Hewitt has Final Four experience. And if he can get a team anchored by Luke Schenscherr to the Finals this should be doable as well.

MyLine

I'm calling it Colts -2. Let's see how close I am.

Perfect

Seriously, could that have been any better? Driving for the game winning field goal and douche bag throws an INT. His last two passes for the Vikings and Packers have been interceptions that cost their teams a chance to go to the Super Bowl. Perfect.

Best....Ending.....Ever

Divergence from college hoops, but could you honestly script the end of the Saints-Vikes game any better? You know, in these days, the term "classic Favre moment" just doesnt get the airplay it should. Awesome. I'm winded and wired up all at the same time.

Yin and Yang

Has anybody else noticed the Yin and Yang relationship between Wisconsin and Marquette this year? Every game for Marquette goes the same way, they play terrific in the first half, get up big and then fall apart and lose by 5. Wisconsin starts off horrible, falls behind big at half, and then then has a tremendous second half to win by 5. If we could somehow just merge the teams we could have 1 stud team and 1 crappy team.

We Are!! Crap-py!!

Hola - Now, I will not be as idiotic as to call them the #10 team in the country after losing to the Big East equivalent of a womens team. No conference wins in 21 games, Marquette will cure that shit right up. The somewhat optimistic side in me wants to say that they were really due for a letdown game after all the close games. However, there is a part of me that is starting to wonder.....is this all because of being a "young" team, is it the lack of depth, or is it coaching leading to this? I'm not sure where I come down on the question. I will say one thing...if you're looking for a last second shot to win a game and you see a Marquette game within a few points with a minute left, you are best served to switch over and watch the fireworks.

Yuck

Duke loses to the worst team in the ACC; Marquette loses to the worst team in the Big East. Thankfully UNC lost and Wisconsin won otherwise there would be nothing redeeming about last night.

A Sponsor? Umm, No

Well, I was out on Ebay looking for possible food sponsors and I ran into this new Japanese Doritos flavor, Tuna Mayonnaise. Doesn't that sound delicious come Friday morning? Tuna Doritos. I feel like puking already.

Most interesting man....

Even his enemy's list him as their emergency contact.

His charms were so contagious, vaccines were created for it.

He lives vicariously through himself.

People hang on his every word, even the propositions.

He once had an awkward moment, just to see how it felt.

Less Than 2 Months...

Two months from today you'll all be hung-over and we'll have experienced one of the best Thursday's of March Madness since the historic year of 2005. Yes, I am predicting this year will be full of solid games. Do not doubt me. Enough with the fluff though. Since we do have less than 2 months to selection Sunday it's time to kick this blog into high gear and start to break down teams, conferences, and sponsors. Today, let's look at the Pac-10. Analyzing the bracket I put out there last night we have a total of 3 Pac-10 teams in currently. At the beginning of the year I said this is a two bid league. Well, I'm sticking to those guns. ASU is only in now because they are leading the conference. Washington's RPI is abysmal and California just got crushed by Washington. I'm going to say Cal is safe as they have a solid RPI and a couple of their loses came with one of their starters out. The rest of the teams are on shaky ground as all the other teams are so awful it's not inconceivable for their RPI's to go down throughout league play. After all is said and done I say Cal ends up with an At-large worthy body of work while another team, I'll say Washington, wins the Pac-10 tourney.

Since we're on the Pac-10 and it's limited bid's this year let me show a comparison of this weeks bracket and how they stack up against a couple other conferences:
Pac-10 - 3 teams
A-10 - 5 teams
Mountain West - 3 teams
WCC - 2 teams
C-USA - 2 teams

Yes, I'm spoiling a future column or two but that's how bad the Pac-10 is this year. They'll end up in the same territory as the WCC and Conference USA.

It was a good night!

Last night's games couldn't have gone any better. Wisconsin wins by 10, Duke wins by 20, and North Carolina looks foolish against Clemson falling by 19. As Ice Cube once said, "Today was a good day."

No Dice On Florida

Well, Florida hung for a while and even had a lead with about 4 minutes left but couldn't hang on and dropped the ball. I was planning to write a story on Kentucky after seeing them for the 3rd time this year but I still can't make my mind up on whether I believe in them as a serious threat for the Final Four or not. They can look so good at times and so poor at others. Their record is gaudy but they've struggled to win against their top competition. On top of that their Adjusted Defensive Efficiency is abysmal for a top 2 team hoyvin blavin!!

As for the evening both Kansas and Texas go on the road for some Big 12 play. I expect Kansas to roll but Texas might have a hard time containing Craig Brackins. They'll still win but I expect it to be closer then most would think. Wisconsin will have to learn to win without Leuer and I tonight's tilt at Northwestern should be a typical 47-44 Big 10 barnburner. Shield your eyes from the carnage. Duke gets BC and that should be a cake walk. Finally, UNC at Clemson is important as the loser slides even further down the bracket.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Tonight's Games

A couple worth watching out there. Is Kansas State for real against Texas A&M? Will Purdue bounce back against Ohio State or with Evan Turner can OSU turn things around? And my favorite of the night, Kentucky visits Florida. Now, I missed the ball on the Cornell over Kansas prediction so I'm not missing this one. Florida wins going away, Florida 86, Kentucky 72.

Other good quotes.

- He speaks fluent French, in Russian.
- He once punched a magician. That’s right, you heard me.
- His personality is so magnetic, he is unable to carry credit cards.
- He once had an awkward moment, just to see how it feels.
- He was once found guilty, of being innocent.

Yes, I am arriving for an on site visit Friday, although I trust that preparations are already well underway for March. We should probably have a planning session to work on some new sponsors this year.

Initial thoughts based on past experience would be Febreze and Gas-X.

Is it too early to buy some envelopes?

Random Thinking

OK, I didnt have the heart to post yesterday after the debacle that was the Packer game. When I die and go the pearly gates, I'll have to thank God for f-ing with my emotions like that. We'll probably have a good laugh.

Any-hoo, your 10th ranked (see my previous posts) Marquette Warriors found yet another interesting and heartbreaking way to lose to a top-10 team by 2 points. This time it was the furious rally that fell just short. Gee, that sounds really familiar. God was on a roll with me this weekend. But seriously....get a final shot off....please. At least next time Marquette plays Villanova, the spread can be squarely set at Villanova -2.

Back to football. Nick Saban is a prick. Did you really need to score with 47 seconds left when Texas wasnt even thinking of calling their timeout. What are you really proving in that situation, except your prick-iness?

Much like the PGA visits the site of its major tournaments before tee time, I hear that Ben is coming into town to ensure that preparations are progressing correctly for March. Look forward to seeing you.

Dos Equis man rules. Brian's favorite is obviously "He doesn't get drunk, he just gets classier.." I'll take "The police often question him.. Just because they find him interesting"

Duke loses this weekend to #17 GT. OK, good win. Did you really need to storm the court? You're #17....act like you've been there.

Great win for UW....bad news on Leuer.

B-out.

Dos Equis

I have homework for everybody. Before March Madness I NEED a cardboard cutout of the Most Intersting Man In The World. He'll be the official mascot of Moustache March Madness!

Pick your favorite The Most Intersting Man In The World comment:

One hour of conversation with him is equivalent to 16 years of college.

He is like Chuck Norris, only interesting.

He learned how to play Chinese checkers.. in Japan.

He doesn't get drunk, he just gets classier..

He can speak braille fluently, and it is said, he writes his signature in sign language.

If he were to give you directions, you'd never get lost. And you would arrive at least 5 minutes early.

The police often question him.. Just because they find him interesting

Its pretty obvious.

MU lost to #6 Villanova by 2.
MU lost to #8 West Virginia by 1.
MU beat #12 Georgetown tonite (thank god, it saved you all from a relentless rant on this here blog).

Therefore, MU is the #10 team in the nation. I believe the results speak for themselves.

I Was...

Going to predict that Cornell was going to give Kansas a game tonight but then I forgot about it. Halftime, Cornell 41, Kansas 38.

Did you know that the Ivy League has 2 teams in the top 35 of the RPI? The bad thing is unless Cornell and Harvard run the table in split against each other there is no way they can both make the big dance. The low RPI's of the rest of the Ivy will slowly drag them down until one of them gets surpased by the Big 12's 7th best team.

Amaze your boss with that fact.

Maybe This is Why He Got Fired

The problem is he's probably right. Darn Kids.

Not safe for work unless using headphones.

I Can Feel It

A buzzer beater to wet the appetite.

I have an explanation.

I bet the Marquette Warriors would have won those games. Either that or God hates the uniforms.

Conference Play

Conference play has started and now it's on. Out March to Madness is in full stride.

F with the F F F

Villanova 74, Marquette 72, Dammit all, this is bullshit. This team has lost to Florida State by 1 after having a huge lead, lost to NC State by 4 after leading by double-digits, lost to unbeaten West Virginia by 1 after controlling most of the game (albeit with small-ish leads), and loses today to one-loss Villanova by 2 when leading in the last minute of the game. 8 points = 4 losses. guess what time it is? Time to win a close game!! At some point your team has to start growing an win one of these - its a fine line between the team staying confident and losing hope. Stupid Buzz Williams and his gigantic melon and dumb ass sweatervest should put some of that brainpower into winning a close game.

End Communication.
