Conference Tourneys March 1

Three more conferences tournaments begin on Wednesday. Time for a quick look.

Big South

The Big South invades Charlotte for their tournament this year. Three teams are currently above 200 in KenPom. They include league champ, UNC-Asheville at 148 who is one of two teams amongst conference brethren with a positive AdjEM. They won the league by 4 games and should be prohibitive favorites.

Longwood is also a positive AdjEM and 160 in KenPom but we’re swept by Asheville. Radford is 180 in KenPom. Winthrop has been the best offense during league play and has a win over Asheville.

Asheville is the pick and can probably be a pain for someone for awhile in a game in the opening round.

NEC

The NEC, the worst KenPom division in D1, also begins tomorrow night. All games will be played on campus sites. Merrimack won the league and still has an overall losing record. They have won 8 in a row.

All teams are in the 300’s, so it’s “wide-open”. Wagner has the best KenPom number at 315, one spot ahead of Merrimack and they have a road win over them as well. They’re the pick, even at 8-8 in league. Play-in fodder.

Ohio Valley

The OVC kicks off tomorrow from Evansville, IN and will be the first league to put a team into the dance.

There is no Murray State or Belmont anymore, so the OVC has lost a bit of its luster. Morehead State won the regular season title by 3 games and is 241 in KenPom. There are a handful of teams between that number and 300 in KenPom, so Morehead State isn’t a lock.

Morehead State has won 11 of 12 and is the pick but this thing has the potential for chaos.

Tuesday Notes and Conference Tournaments

3 of the last 4 in played last night and 1 of them took a loss.  North Carolina beat Florida State to stay in the bracket while West Virginia got a great win at Iowa State to probably move up a bit.  Oklahoma State was only loser of the bunch getting beat by Baylor. Not a horrible loss but Mississippi state and Michigan are ready to pounce.

Also, Nevada took a bad loss at Wyoming.  They are a 10 seed currently but this one hurts the resume.

As for my Tuesday Conference previews, here you go:

Sun Belt - #1 Seed: Southern Miss

Pick: #3 Seed Marshall

Horizon - #1 Seed: Youngstown State

Pick: #3 Seed Cleveland State

Patriot - #1 Seed: Colgate

Pick: #1 Seed Colgate

Conference Tournaments February 28 Edition

Horizon League

Our friends in the Horizon League begin their conference tournament tomorrow at campus sites and play the semi-finals and the final in Indianapolis.

Youngstown State won the league and is the top KenPom team at 122. Northern Kentucky is 174 and Cleveland State is 187. The 2-seed is Milwaukee which is 231. Wright State, who is the 6-seed is 179 in KenPom.

This tends to produce wild results in their tournament, so let’s go with Wright State who somehow played their final 4 games on the road, finishing 1-3.

Patriot League

The Patriot League begins their conference tournament tomorrow as well with all games on campus sites.

Colgate won the league going away once again, finishing 17-1. They’re 117th in KenPom. Navy who finished tied for 2nd is the only other league member with a sub-200 KenPom number at 176.  All others are 250+.

If we remember, Colgate went 16-2 last year in league and earned a 14-seed and should have beaten Wisconsin in the opener. They’re the easy pick in the Patriot and a potential Cinderella.

Sun Belt

The Sun Belt is ready to start rocking Pensacola tomorrow night with the Fun Belt tournament kicking off. The Sun Belt has a positive AdjustedEM for the overall league, albeit +.022, so it’s not bad.

Southern Miss won the league after being picked by most to finish in the bottom. They’re one of 4 top-100 KenPom teams at 92. 3-seed Marshall is 79, 4-seed James Madison is 95 and 2- seed Louisiana is 95. So, yeah, 12 or 13 seed stuff but definitely capable of beating a 4 or 5.

Worth pointing out, Old Dominion closed out the season with home wins over Southern Miss and Marshall and finished 19-11 overall. KenPom doesn’t love them because of losses to 2 near sub-300 teams near mid-season.

The pick will be Marshall but this one feels like it’s wide open a d could be lots of fun for junkies.

Weekly Top-10 Overseeded/Underseeded

It’s been a bit of a wild year in college hoops and March may hold more of the same. Let’s look at some teams that are going to be over and underseeded come March

Note: These are based off Friday bracketology and some lines changed over the weekend.

10. Boise State: UNDERSEEDED AT 10: Boise State is 27 in this mornings KenPom and have the nation’s 10th best defense. They have a 15-point win over Texas A&M. Overtime loss to San Jose State wasn’t good last night as they finish with San Diego State and Utah State. They may end up swearing in two weeks but the analytics like them.

9. Texas A&M: UNDERSEEDED AT 8: The Aggies lost yesterday at Mississippi State but remain in second in the SEC. They’re 25th overall in KenPom. On the 8/9 line, they’d be a tough second round opponent for any 1-seed.

8. West Virginia: UNDERSEEDED AT 11: Like Boise State, a loss yesterday puts them on the bubble. Still, at 21st in KenPom, they’re a product of the Big XII meat grinder where someone has to lose. Luckily for them, they get to go to Iowa State and have a home closer against Kansas State. Opportunities await.

7. Maryland: UNDERSEEDED AT 8: Kevin Willard has done a good job year-one at Maryland. They’re 19th in KenPom with the 33rd best offense and 27th best defense.

6. Kentucky: UNDERSEEDED AT 9: Have the Cats figured things out? Maybe. They pantsed Auburn yesterday and have won 4 straight. The offense is up to 13 in KenPom, though the defense is lagging at 78. They’ll probably move up. A potential nightmare second round matchup for a higher seed.

5. Kansas State: OVERSEEDED AT 2: Feels like those Chris Mack Xavier teams that got overseeded a few times. Earned the seeds but the analytics weren’t as high on them. 18th in KenPom. 57th on offense and 14th in defense.

4. Arkansas: UNDERSEEDED AT 9: The Razorbacks have earned the seeding in what has to be a disappointing season for them. They took Alabama to overtime at Alabama yesterday and have frosh star Nick Smith back. If you have a nickel or two, I’m just saying.

3. Virginia: OVERSEEDED AT 4: They’ll drop back after this weekend but probably not too far. Not a typical Tony Bennett Virginia team. Down to 38th in KenPom with the 75th best offense and 28th best offense. Get Clemson and Louisville at home to end the season, so they could still get a share of the conference title but this team will be ripe for a March upset.

2. UConn: UNDERSEEDED AT 5: An early Big East swoon pushed them down. They’re still 5th in KenPom and you better hope as a 1-seed, sloppy UConn shows up opening weekend. Don’t be surprised if they make a regional final at least. Scariest team coming out of the Big East at the moment.

1. Miami: OVERSEEDED AT 5: Yesterday saw the Canes blow a 54-31 lead because their defense is abysmal. Out of all the teams on this list, their 123 KenPom defense is the worst of any, on either side of the ball. And that lead they blew was at home to a terrible Florida State team. First round fodder possibilities

Atlantic Sun Tourney

Guess what?  Conference tournament action begins tomorrow as the ASun tips things off.  All games are played on campus sites.

Liberty will be the prohibitive favorite. They won a share the regular season title with Kennesaw State and are 44 in KenPom. Kennesaw State is 130th in KenPom. No word on Kennesaw State pool boys but they did beat Liberty in their only meeting.

Liberty’s Darius McGhee is 10th in KenPom POY. The diminutive guard is a high usage player but wildly efficient. Liberty is also the best defensive rebounding team in the nation.

The pick is Liberty and they’ll be a trendy upset pick in the Big Dance

Friday Morning Notes

Just as I begin to talk about North Texas as a viable At-Large candidate they go ahead and lose.  Cursed!

The rest of the bubble teams all won yesterday including Michiga, Penn State, USC, and FAU.

A new bracket will be out later today.

Virginia Sucks.

Bubble Watch – Mid Major Edition

Charleston vs Towson – Lunardi doesn’t have them as the auto bid and has them out but I’ve mentioned numerous times he’s a hack and if you follow the Bracket Project (http://bracketproject.blogspot.com/) he’s a below average Bracketologist.  In fact he’s ranked 88th of 148 (http://bracketmatrix.com/rankings.html).  Of course ESPN sucks so I see why they still employ him.  Anyway, they are my auto-bid but still have at large potential. They are 2-1 in Quad1 and Quad 2 games.

Oral Roberts vs South Dakota – undefeated in conference play I think they can get a bid if they win out until the Semi’s of the conference tournament.  They only have 1 Q1/Q2 win so its close.  Best to continue winning

FAU vs UTSA – This will come as shock but FAU is currently 5-3 in Q1/Q2 games.  That is not only worth a auto-bid, that’s a solid 9/10 seed.  I think I have them under-seeded at 11 right now.

North Texas vs Charlotte – Nobody has the Mean Green on their watch but they are the 2 seed in C-USA behind FAU.  They are right around 50 in all metrics and have a 3-3 record in Q1/Q2 games.  This is a bubble team in my mind.

Bubble Watch - Power Conferences

Penn State vs Ohio State – Penn St is one my last 4 in and don’t have a very good resume.  UNC is looking to take their spot with a loss

Michigan vs Rutgers – Michigan is in my Next Four out and need a lot of help.  They have talent so a run isn’t out of the question but they need to keep momentum tonight.

USC vs Colorado – USC is one of those teams that looks like a tournament team one day then not a tournament team the next.  They need any win as a projected 11 seed.

Wednesday Night Notes

Wisconsin got a much needed win over Iowa while New Mexico lost to Boise St.  I think these two teams flip from first four out to last four in.

Florida lost to Kentucky and will join Oklahoma as removed from Consideration.

North Carolina got a much needed win over Notre Dame but it's not enough to get them in the bracket.  I have them as the 1st out at this point.

Virginia continues to ruin basketball by losing to Boston College putting up less than their football team in the process.

Winners and Losers

Best game of the night was Marquette and Creighton.  Banger of a game with Marquette squeaking out a 2 point road win.  A 2 seed is possible.

Big Winners last night include Texas A&M, Michigan State, and Utah State

Big Losers include Oklahoma who is no longer on my AC list, Mississippi State, and Xavier who was upset by 'Nova.

Tuesday Bubble Notes

Last night the only Bubble game was West Virginia whopping Oklahoma State.  West Virginia was my first team out so we will see if anybody loses over the next 2 days.

Tonight we have a handful highlighted below:

Miami @ Virginia Tech - Tech is barely hanging in the Also Considered group.

Mississippi State @ Missouri - Miss St is one of my last 4 in and as noted above West Virginia is looking to move in with a State loss.

Texas Tech @ Oklahoma - neither team is close to in but both need the W here.

San Jose St @ Nevada - the Wolfpack looks safe but this would be a bad loss and drop them from their current 10 seed.

Lastly Marquette plays Creighton which is the game of the night.  Both have Final Four potential and seemed to be flying under the radar up until maybe a week ago.

The Top 10 Asks if You’re For Real

Feels like we have a lot of teams middling around the top 20 this year. It’s not really that much different than most years but let’s start exposing some teams.

10. Marquette - We’re at the point of the season where Marquette fans are now saying “more” like they’re Kylo Ren trying to evaporate Luke Skywalker from the universe. Reality is, the season is a resounding success regardless of how it finishes. The offense has stagnated a bit and gets a big test in Omaha this week. A win Tuesday should just about lock up the regular season Big East title.

9. Creighton - Speaking of Omaha, Creighton now looks like the team we expected in the pre-season. Believe it or not, this team’s strength is its defense and the offense is good enough for a Final 4 run. Depth is a concern but I like their chances next month more than some teams still to be listed.

8. Tennessee - Calling them frauds is unfair. They have the nations best defensive team but the offense is only 67th. Could they make a Final Four? The answer is yes but I won’t be surprised to see them go home the first weekend.

7. Purdue - This is still a Final 4 type team, however, they only shoot 33% from deep. Teams only shoot 30% from deep against them but playing a glacial pace, can Purdue survive a hot night from an opponent and score enough to overcome that? They’ve scored 58 and 54 the last two games which were losses. If they manage to finish 4-0 with wins over Illinois, Indiana and at the Kohl Hole, they should get a 1-seed but they’d be a vulnerable 1-seed.

6. St. Mary’s - Another slow paced team, they make enough 3’s and don’t turn it over. Still, this feels like a team that loses in the 2nd round by a score of 62-51 in a game that was never that close.

5. Arizona - 7th in KenPom offense and 40th in KenPom defense. They love to push the pace. If you dive into the numbers, it’s simply a solid team. They finish the season at home against ASU and then travel to LA for USC and UCLA. If they run that gauntlet 3-0, they stay out west for the tournament regardless of what happens with the Pac-12 tournament. I’ll just put it out there the much-maligned Pac-12 might put 2 squads into the Final 4.

4. UCLA - Mick Cronin has done better here than I think most people thought he would. He’s playing his style of basketball, good defense, slow-tempo and efficient offense. It’s maddening to watch at times because they could push pace at times with their athletes and part of me wonders if that’s a flaw that comes back to haunt them at some point. Still, 23rd in offense and 2nd in defense, this is a team more than capable of cutting the nets down. Head to Utah and Colorado this week and finish with the desert schools in LA. The Arizona game will have a lot on the line.

3. Kansas - For one half yesterday, the Jayhawks looked like the best team in America. That, however, was after a half where they looked like a team itching to go home early in March. They’re 15th in both offense and defense which makes them legit title contenders. The last game of the year at Texas may decide the Big XII Title. Fascinating squad.

2. Houston - I’m still torn on them. Calling them Gonzaga of ‘23 is insulting to them and the Zags but the difference between the WCC and AAC is minimal this year. What I’m trying to say is, they’re not getting tested enough in league. They’re +14 in AdjEM versus the next closest team in the AAC. They play slow and can get into rock fights. A national title wouldn’t shock me, nor would a 58-47 loss to an 8-seed like Michigan State in round 2.

1. Alabama - The antithesis to Houston. 2nd fastest team in the country with the 3rd best defense. When the offense is firing on all cylinders, it’s like watching UNLV of yore. Not sure we’ve seen such an explosive squad in decades. Unbelievably, the last game of the season at Texas A&M could decide the league. Just remember, the defensive numbers are better than the offensive numbers and the offense can run you out of the gym. Wild team

Thursday Is a Blizzard of Notes

Not really; it is snowing outside somewhat heavy.  Anyway....

Big Winners last night include Clemson, Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Boise State as it pertains to the Bubble.  These 4 teams were either just out or one of the last 5-6 in.  They all got wins which helps their case.

On the opposite side Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Virginia Tech all took losses.  Seems like Miss St is a candidate to drop out of tomorrow's bracket.

Outside the bubble we had two awesome games in Alabama-Tennessee and Xavier-Marquette.  Tennessee continues to be Jeckyl and Hyde and beat 1 seeded Alabama.  I still think Tennessee is ripe for a 14 over 3 upset in March but this was a big win.  Marquette beat the buzzer and thus beat Xavier.  Now up top by themselves in the Big East the game versus Creighton looms large.  For now Marquette looks like a team nobody is going to want come opening weekend.

Lots of games tonight but not a lot of Bubble games.  Tomorrow, a new bracket.

Wednesday News and Notes

Teams that helped themselves last night:

Penn State
Seton Hall
Auburn
Wisconsin

Teams that hurt themselves last night:

Michigan
New Mexico

Michigan is on its last legs and New Mexico is probably out of the bracket replaced by perhaps Wisconsin or Kentucky if they beat Mississippi State tonight.

Speaking of which, that's the biggest bubble game out there tonight; Kenyucky @ Miss St.

Other games of note are:

1. Arkansas @ Texas A&M
2. Mississippi @ Florida
3. Florida State @ Clemson
4. Virginia Tech @ Georgia Tech

Tuesday, February 14, 2023

Tuesday Notes

Well last night did not go well for North Carolina nor West Virginia.  Both lost and while I think UNC stays in West Virginia may be out at this point.  I do brackets every other day at this point so we need to see what happens tonight.

As for tonight here are the top games I'm looing at

Missouri @ Auburn - Auburn is one of my ast 4 in; I have them lower then Palm or that hack Lunardi.  Plus Bruce Pearl is probably cheating at something right now

Kansas @ Oklahoma St - Okie St is a 9 seed and can lose and be safe but a win here is going to put them in the top half of the bracket and create some separation

Michigan @ Wisconsin - neither team is in and I don't think a win gets them in.  Whoever loses is right at the brink of elimination.

Wyoming @ New Mexico - The Lobos have fallen off a cliff and are currently my last team in.  We know what a loss does.

Monday, February 13, 2023

Monday Bubble Games

Miami @ North Carolina - UNC currently sits on the 10 line but has little room for error at this point.  A win tonight over a good Miami team gives them a Quad 1 win

West Virginia @ Baylor - West Virginia is one of last 4 in and loss probably drops them out if I update every day.  They just got smoked over the weekend so they need this one.

Northeastern @ Charleston - Charleston currently has the auto-bid for the Colonial but if they need an at-large bid best not to lose anytime soon

Top 10 Busts Your Brackets

Forget the bubble and 1-seeds, here are 10 teams capable of busting brackets next month.

10. Iona - The Gaels made more noise earlier in the season but are still a steady 82 in KenPom. Have a victory over A-10 contender St. Louis. Much better than St. Peter’s we’re a year ago coming out of the MAAC.

9. Furman - The Paladins are 81 in KenPom with the nation’s 34th best offense with the 12th best effective fg% on offense. Have won 8 consecutive games.

8. Bradley - The Braves have won 6th straight games and are 79th in KenPom. 49th in adjustedD with the 23rd best defensive effective fg%. Would be a pain.

7. Drake - Probably the favorite in The Valley holds a win over Mississippi State.

6. Yale - The Ivy’s best team by the metrics. They’re 76th in KenPom, about 45 spots ahead of Princeton. Balanced team. 80th in adjustedO and 76th in AdjustedD.

5. Kent State - 33rd best KenPom defense. 14th in defensive turnover %. If they get matched up with a sloppy team, they’ll have a chance. Lost by 2 at Charleston.

4. Charleston - Mid-major darling as the year turned, Pat Kelsey’s team have won 3 straight by double-digits after a hiccup at the beginning of the month.

3. Sam Houston State - Another defensive-minded of these teams. Bearkats can’t spell but can turn you over. 8th best defensive turnover %. Another matchup nightmare for a sloppy team. Also shoot 40% from 3. Put them in the Sweet 16.

2. Liberty - Though higher in KenPom than Oral Roberts, they lost to Oral Bob.

The Most Disappointing 10

Since no one appears to be good, let’s take a look at the 10 most disappointing teams of 2023.

10. Oregon - How good was Oregon supposed to be this year is a fair question. Originally 29th to start the year in KenPom, the Ducks currently sit 54th after a good win at Arizona State yesterday. The LA teams come to Eugene next weekend, giving the Ducks a chance at life.

9. Ohio State - The Buckeyes are in the same spot they were at the start of the year, 32nd in KenPom. However, at 11-11, they need a lot to happen to make a dance appearance. They got up to 11 in KenPom and have proceeded to lose 8 of 9 before this afternoons game against Michigan.

8. Michigan - Speaking of Michigan, the Wolverines started the year at 26 on KenPom and are currently 57th. They’ve lost some close games but also been destroyed in games. Poor roster construction and a key injury are the culprits.

7. Arkansas - The Razorbacks are 27th in KenPom after starting the year 14th. A middling offense is to blame but this team has NBA players on it. They’re 5-5 in the SEC and have time to figure things out but they look like just another team.

6. Texas Tech - This is probably unfair to the Red Raiders but they started the year 21st in KenPom and are down to 69. Someone has to finish last in the Big XII and it looks like it’ll be Texas Tech. They got blown out at Baylor yesterday and are now 1-9 in conference.

5. Dayton - The Flyers started the year 24 in KenPom and are down to 72. Injuries are partially to blame but they’re still a non-factor in a so-so A-10.

4. Gonzaga - The Zags are still a Top-20 KenPom team, currently 18th but started the season 3 with visions of a title run. The defense has been bad all year and is worse in league play, not a good sign for March.

3. Villanova - The Wildcats have been losing a lot of close games but still losing. Questionable depth and missing Justin Moore for most of the season hasn’t helped. Get the feeling Jay Wright knew when to go. 72nd in KenPom after starting the year at 19.

2. North Carolina - They started the year 9 in KenPom. While good, the analytics weren’t as sold on the Tarheels as the media was. Brian has them on the 8/9 line, a far cry from a team most expected to be the class of the ACC.

1. Kentucky - To finish off the Blue Bloodbath, UK entered the year 1 in KenPom and are now 36th. They’ve been a messy, inconsistent team all year. Where and how they finish is anyone’s guess but I wouldn’t hold my breath that they’ll figure it out.
