- Wisconsin overcame a “tragic” week and beat Michigan State yesterday. It didn’t tell me much other than Sparty is a flawed team. I haven’t commented here on the week that was in Madison but this narrative of adversity is absurd. Brad Davison and Wisconsin brought his suspension on themselves by ignoring his dirtbag tendencies. As for Kobe King, the diarrhea spewed on social media by the fans just reinforced what is thought of them locally and nationally. It isn’t good and they should take a look in the mirror about what they say about college kids who decide Madison isn’t the shrine it’s painted as. It’s not for everybody, just like Duke isn’t for everybody or Central Michigan isn’t for everybody.
- The Big East cannibalized itself a bit yesterday. First, Xavier went into Seton Hall and kicked the Pirates tail. Not to be outdone, Villanova lost at home to Creighton in a game the BlueJays largely controlled from the opening tip. Butler also lost at home to Providence and their fade continues. February started out a bloodbath for the league.
- Duke won at Syracuse last night in a game that featured 70 free throws. Duke scored 97 points and only made 6 3-pointers. Okay, then. Louisville went into NC State and won by 20. Florida State bounced back from a loss to Virginia and beat Virginia Tech. Those 3 teams have separated themselves from the rest of the league.
- In Pac-12 upsets, Stanford beat Oregon. As of this morning, 5 teams have 3 league losses. Pac-12 after dark will apply to basketball again after a few years of missing. Not sure how good any of them are but at least the games will have some meaning.
- AAC also had upset Saturday as Tulsa beat Wichita State at the buzzer and Cincinnati beat Houston. Houston is the best KenPom team at 26 and then Wichita at 39. The league will be tough down the stretch but once again, there is no legit threat coming from the league.
- Gonzaga survived San Francisco without Killian Tillie but they look like team ripe for an upset or two down the stretch. The WCC will be some late night appointment viewing as well this month.
