KenPom Today

We're a week into conference play as we chug along to March Madness. Let's see what the Top 30 looks like according to KenPom.

2 conferences have 6 teams in the Top 30, the ACC & B1G. The Big XII has 5, as does the SEC. Pac-12 has 2, matching the Big East. The American, Horizon and WCC each have 1 team.

The ACC is the top conference with 4 teams in the top 10. Out of the 4, Duke, UNC & Virginia are legit Final 4 teams. Louisville is 5th which blows my mind but they've played a soft schedule. Miami actually checks in at 11, so the league has 5 of the top 11 teams.

The B1G is next and has two teams I. The top 10, both legit Final 4 contenders in MSU & Purdue. Iowa is 13 and Maryland is 15. I'm in the wait and see mode on Iowa but think they're a Final 4 contender. Maryland has the talent. Let's see how they handle some road games.

Both the Big XII and SEC have 5 teams. One is not like the other. The Big XII have 2 legit Final 4 teams in Kansas and Oklahoma. They played one of the great regular season games of the past decade  this past Monday. How about 3 more matchups? West Virginia at 12 & Iowa State at 17 are threats to make a run in March.

The highest rated team is Kentucky at 19. Texas A&M is a spot behind and might be a better team. Don't think Kentucky is a legit contender. Florida and Vandy also check in. Both would be in the dance but Vandy is trending down.

The Big East has two teams along with the Pac-12. Villanova is actually 1 as of today and Xavier is 8. Both are legit Final 4 teams. Arizona is 16 and surprisingly, USC checks in at 21. Not sure either team is a Final 4 threat. Arizona has been without Kaleb Tarczewski for part of the season, so let's see how the rest of the year shakes out.

SMU is 14 but not eligible for the tournament. St. Mary's of the WCC is 18th. They haven't left the San Francisco area all season, so let's see how they handle some travel. That said, the Gaels should be back in the dance. Valpo checks in at 28 and continues along as a team no one wants to deal with.
